May-December relationships are a thing here in the Coachella Valley. Younger are attracted to older. “Daddy” takes on a whole new meaning. Like most relationships outside the norm, they are looked down upon. I take considerable teasing from my friends for my proclivity for younger men. But it takes two to tango, and if both are drawn to each other the relationship can work quite well.
“Age is one of the least likely factors to happiness in a relationship,” according to Ruschelle Khanna, CSW. “Relationships are made happy when they are based on trust, commitment, and understanding and respecting the other person’s experiences.” Khanna says that relationships with age gaps present may actually be happier than similarly aged couples, as they’ve often taken more care to put in the work, and their work is thus rewarded.
I saw Dezart Performs Mr. Parker over the weekend with stunning performances by the three person cast. It tackles the issue head-on and is well worth seeing. But this relationship didn’t end well. As our theatre reviewer Stephen Radosh calls out (and I agree with): “It will make you laugh in recognition and will also bring some tears to the eyes for that very same reason.”
For me, that recognition did bring wisps of nostalgia for love’s lost, and a validation that May-December’s are indeed a delicate dance.

“Pillars of Palm Springs” Public Art Installation
In celebration of World Art Day, on Monday, April 15 at 10 am the City of Palm Springs Public Arts Commission will host a special proclamation and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the official unveiling of a spectacular new public art installation along the Tahquitz Canyon Way median running from Palm Springs International Airport to Sunrise Way called “Pillars of Palm Springs.” [Learn more about the artists and their work]. Coachella Weekend 2
The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival returns after a short 4-day breather for Weekend 2, this Friday–Sunday, April 19–21 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. With a capacity of 125,000, total annual attendance for the Coachella festival is estimated at a quarter of a million people over the two weekends. This year, headliners Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat, and Tyler, the Creator are bringing their unique styles to the desert stage, with dozens of acts across multiple stages filling out the weekend of wall-to-wall music. Mr. Parker
Dezart Performs presents Mr. Parker, a new play by Michael McKeever, writer of Daniel’s Husband, Fridays through Sundays, April 12–21. At 54 years old, Terry Parker finds himself at a crossroads in his life. After the loss of his partner of 30 years, he finds himself suddenly single and unable to adjust to a world that has moved on without him. After a night of heavy drinking, he wakes up with a 28-year-old bartender-slash-Uber-driver. These two very different people begin a tentative relationship, and what starts out as a one-night stand becomes a journey of self-discovery.
