At Sunnylands Center & Gardens rises a pyramid on the great lawn. It’s been in place for a few weeks, but is now revealed as part of Desert X, the biennial art installation that transforms 11 different places throughout the Coachella into the backdrops for its artists.

We’re proud media sponsors of the event this year, and one of the installations spoke to me as I viewed the artist’s video explanation. The Living Pyramid by artist Agnes Denes is not only significant in place, but also in its meaning.

“Its hierarchical form echoes the idea of Sunnylands as the ‘Camp David of the American West,’ a place where political and thought leaders from around the globe have convened ‘to promote world peace and facilitate international agreement.’ At the same time, the pyramid constantly changes, according to Denes.

What really struck me was her narrative around the piece, which you can view below. Here’s the text of her explanation which spoke to me in the context of our political climate today:

There will always be the oppressors, and the insulated ones whose privileges gives them higher altitude than those who swim in the mire of adversity . My pyramids are an ointment to ease the wound, an optimistic edifice in a place of turmoil.

It conveys the cycles of life as it renews itself from soil to seed to plant to blossom. it speaks many languages and to all humanity.

Thatโ€™s it! That explains what the pyramids are all about.

You’ll have till May 11th to visit the installations of Desert X this year. I plan on visiting on numerous occasions as friends and family visit and as we move from Winter to Spring. This piece will morph over that time. I hope it will evoke some optimism in these times of turmoil for you as well.
