#VisitHotterPalmSprings isn’t exactly a hashtag that we want to see shared on Instagram or TikTok. But the heat is a fact of life this summer and fall across the West, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Coachella Valley is not unique in experiencing the effects of climate change, but this summer has been brutal! 121 degrees on Thursday will be followed by a string of continuing triple digits. It’s been particularly hard on our tourism economy this summer, so we’re continuing our trend of recommending indoor events for this weekend.
This is the last weekend that the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will be in operation until October. And I’m going to make my way up to “the top of the tram” to start my weekend. The “relief” from the heat will be relative and oh-so minor: Highs are expected to be in the 90s. But that experience of lifting off the desert floor through five “life zones” before landing in the alpine forest is grand.
How much longer will the tramway – and the alpine forest survive? We get a clue from a 2010 Life After People episode “Holiday Hell”. The dry desert environment allows the tramway to survive for 120 years without mankind to maintain it; however, corrosion eventually sets in on the cable and towers, leading it to collapse into Chino Canyon. For today, Iโll be enjoying the ride and trying to keep my mind off the worst case scenario.
